Nvidia's Jensen Huang Sets Bold Timeline for Artificial General Intelligence

By Staff Writer, 04 March 2024

Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, made a bold prediction on Friday (March 1st), suggesting that artificial general intelligence (AGI) might be achievable within the next five years, according to some interpretations.

Speaking at an economic forum hosted by Stanford University, Huang, who leads the renowned artificial intelligence chip manufacturer, addressed the longstanding ambition within Silicon Valley to develop computers with human-like thinking capabilities.

In response to inquiries about the timeline for realizing this goal, Huang emphasized that the feasibility of AGI largely hinges on its definition.

He suggested that if the benchmark is the capability to successfully complete human tests, AGI could become a reality in the near future: "If I gave an AI ... every single test that you can possibly imagine, you make that list of tests and put it in front of the computer science industry, and I'm guessing in five years time, we'll do well on every single one."

Huang's optimism is rooted in the remarkable progress witnessed in the AI domain. He noted that while current AI systems excel in tasks like passing legal bar exams, they still face challenges in specialized medical assessments like gastroenterology.

However, Huang expressed confidence that within five years, AI could overcome these hurdles and perform proficiently in any given test.

However, Huang acknowledged the complexity of defining AGI, pointing out the ongoing debate among scientists regarding the workings of the human mind.

He stressed that differing interpretations of AGI could potentially delay its development, as engineers typically rely on well-defined objectives.

Nvidia's recent achievement of reaching a market value of $2 trillion underscores the company's leadership in the AI sector, making Huang's predictions significant within the tech industry.
