Microsoft: 8.5M Devices Affected by CrowdStrike-Related Outage

By Staff Writer 22 July 2024

A software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike (CRWD.O) caused a global tech outage affecting nearly 8.5 million Microsoft (MSFT.O) devices, Microsoft revealed in a blog post on Saturday.

The company estimated that the update impacted less than one percent of all Windows devices. Despite this small percentage, the outage had significant economic and societal impacts due to CrowdStrike's extensive use by enterprises that provide critical services, including healthcare, banking, and broadcasting.

Microsoft noted that CrowdStrike has assisted in developing a solution to expedite a fix for the affected Microsoft Azure infrastructure. Additionally, Microsoft is collaborating with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform to share information and mitigate the widespread effects observed across the industry.
