Nanovel Raises $900K Funding to Revolutionize Citrus-Harvesting Field
California’s Citrus Research Board (CRB) has secured a $900,000 non-dilutive funding agreement with Nanovel, a company specializing in agricultural technology. The deal includes the development and delivery of an AI-powered citrus-harvesting robot, following a series of field trials that are set to begin in spring 2025. These trials will be conducted in collaboration with citrus growers in California.
Nanovel, an Israeli firm founded in 2018 by CEO Isaac Mazor, has developed a cutting-edge autonomous robot designed to address the challenges faced by citrus growers, particularly labor shortages and rising operational costs. The robot is equipped with AI and advanced vision systems, enabling it to harvest citrus fruits efficiently, even in dense foliage.
The innovative design features a multi-arm platform with telescopic arms, capable of picking fruit that meets fresh market standards. Initially, the system will be towed by a tractor, but future models will include autonomous navigation. Each arm uses vacuum grippers and precise cutters to delicately handle the fruit, ensuring it remains undamaged during harvesting. The harvested fruit is then transported via conveyor belts to bins.
