Hydrobox Receives $9M to Scale Affordable Hydropower in Kenya
Thomas Poelmans, Hydrobox CEO
Kenya-based Hydrobox has raised $9 million in debt funding to expand its hydro-powered mini-grids, providing affordable electricity to underserved communities. The funding, secured from FMO and EDFI’s ElectriFI, will support eight projects benefiting over 10,000 individuals and businesses.
Hydrobox specializes in compact, rapidly deployable hydropower plants that use IoT technology for efficient and reliable energy delivery. The new projects will electrify 2,582 households across four mini-grids, serving diverse clients such as farms, factories, schools, and hospitals.
By utilizing local rivers, Hydrobox promotes clean energy, reduces carbon emissions, and fosters economic growth. CEO Thomas Poelmans highlighted the critical role of partnerships in advancing energy access, with an ambitious goal to reach one million users in Africa by 2030.
