OpenAI Breaks Funding Record After a $6.6 Billion Round

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has secured the largest venture capital round in history, raising $6.6 billion. The funding, led by Thrive Capital, values the AI startup at $157 billion post-money, bringing OpenAI’s total fundraising to $17.9 billion, according to Crunchbase. Thrive Capital contributed $1.3 billion, with an option to invest another $1 billion by 2025. Microsoft, Nvidia, SoftBank, Khosla Ventures, and others also participated, with Microsoft investing just under $1 billion, Nvidia pledging $100 million, and SoftBank contributing $500 million.

In a blog post, OpenAI said the funding will be used to bolster its leadership in cutting-edge AI research, expand computing capacity, and continue developing tools to tackle complex problems. The company expressed gratitude to its investors and partners and aims to foster an AI-driven ecosystem that benefits everyone.
