Healthtech or e-health is Egypt’s 3rd largest start-up sector. The pandemic triggered investments in healthtech companies worldwide, as doctors were trying to figure out how to practice online, and funding startups that are applying technology to medical care. In 2021, the number of deals in the healthcare sector in Egypt was 12 which saw a 20% growth from the previous year.
Vezeeta, initially launched in Cairo in 2012, is a healthcare booking platform that operates across Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. Four million appointments are booked on the application annually, tripling every year. It has raised large funding rounds since 2016, the last one being Series D round of US$40 million in 2020, which it planned on using to add product offerings such as online pharmacies, and expanding to new markets. The company is healthtech’s largest employer with 386 employees in September 2021.
The e-health sector attracted the largest amount of funding of US$50 million in 2020, and while it comes in third in Egypt in terms of number of active startups in 2021, only US$14 million were invested in the sector that year.
