The era of artificial intelligence being constrained purely by code or algorithms is officially over. Today, the AI revolution is colliding with a hard, physical reality: the global energy grid.
As highlighted in The State of AI 2026, global data centers consumed approximately 485 TWh of electricity in 2025. Driven by the aggressive rollout of agentic AI, that figure is projected to nearly double, reaching up to 1,000 TWh by 2030. This explosive demand has exposed a severe structural bottleneck. While next-generation AI models are trained and deployed in mere months, upgrading power grids and building new transmission lines takes years. Consequently, electricity availability is now the ultimate gatekeeper of who can scale intelligence.
In response, capital is flowing upstream. The world’s largest tech giants are financing AI less like software and more like heavy infrastructure. Leading tech firms poured $400 billion into capital expenditure in 2025, with industry leaders guiding to over $720 billion this year—much of it dedicated to securing power and data center capacity.
