Workpay Expands HR Solutions Across Africa, Secures $5M Series A Funding

African businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are grappling with payroll management challenges. This struggle is exacerbated by the limited features of on-site third-party solutions and the high costs and complexity of software designed for large companies.

Enter Workpay, a YC-backed startup providing cloud-based HR, payroll, and benefits solutions tailored to the African market. The company serves two primary customer segments: local businesses with 20-100 employees operating within a single country, and larger firms with 100 to 1,000 employees working across multiple African nations. Workpay's solutions help these businesses manage their workforce and ensure compliance across different markets.

Co-founder and CEO Paul Kimani noted that SMEs prefer comprehensive, full-stack solutions to avoid the costs and complications of using multiple systems. Workpay has adapted to this demand by expanding its offerings beyond payroll to include time and attendance tracking, performance management, and financial services like insurance and lending.

In recognition of its growth and market potential, Workpay has secured $5 million in Series A funding, led by Pan-African venture capital firm Norrsken22, with new contributions from Visa and Plug n Play, along with continued support from existing investors.
