The Invigilator, a South African education technology start-up, has successfully raised R195 million (approximately $11 million) in a funding round aimed at expanding its AI-powered offerings internationally.

The investment was led by Kaltroco, a private investment firm based in Jersey, Channel Islands, along with participation from investment professionals in Nashville, Zurich, and Cape Town. Kaltroco focuses on partnering with founders and management teams to achieve their growth objectives, providing the flexibility to invest according to the needs of its portfolio companies.

The newly acquired funding will enhance The Invigilator’s artificial intelligence models, support multilingual capabilities, and expand operational teams in key global markets, including North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The company also aims to strengthen partnerships with educational institutions and corporate clients.

Co-founder and CEO Nicholas Riemer expressed excitement about the recognition of South African technology on a global scale, stating, “We always knew we were building something special, and the fact that South African technology is creating global awareness is fantastic to see.”

This investment will enable The Invigilator to ramp up its AI development, facilitating greater access to education while maintaining assessment credibility. The launch of their live AI monitoring technology allows for continuous assessment monitoring through AI, enhancing the integrity of the examination process.

Currently, over 100 educational institutions utilize The Invigilator’s platform, including Varsity College, Regenesys Business School, Curro Academy Schools, Eduvos, and Boston City Campus. Founded in 2020, the company focuses on addressing challenges related to academic integrity and providing secure, cost-effective exam monitoring, particularly in resource-constrained settings.

Earlier this year, The Invigilator introduced an AI detection feature that enables educators to identify when AI has been used in homework, assignments, and assessments. This innovative approach analyzes each answer and builds a writing profile for students, helping educators intervene when students overly rely on AI, thereby fostering critical thinking skills.

With this strategic investment, The Invigilator aims to solidify its position as a global leader in secure remote assessment solutions while continuing to promote African excellence on the international stage.
