Shanghai Welcomes Tesla's New Megapack Battery Plant, Production Set for 2024

22 December 2023

Shanghai witnessed the unveiling of Tesla's latest megapack battery manufacturing facility, as reported by Chinese state media on Friday (22/12).

The inauguration event notably marked the acquisition of the land designated for this ambitious venture, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

Projected to churn out an impressive 10,000 megapacks annually, the ceremony's venue was none other than Shanghai itself.

Notably, Tesla remained silent, refraining from providing immediate comments on the matter.

Contrary to earlier timelines, the construction phase for this state-of-the-art facility is now set to kick off in the initial quarter of 2024, with production operations anticipated to commence by the end of the same year.

This adjusted timeline indicates a more extended rollout period for the high-capacity battery project than previously indicated by Tesla back in April.

At that time, the company had outlined plans for construction initiation by the third quarter, eyeing a production kick-off by the second quarter of the subsequent year.

It's pertinent to mention that Tesla's existing gigafactory in Shanghai boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 1.1 million units.

However, the electric vehicle giant is yet to secure regulatory nods for its proposed expansion plans aimed at amplifying electric vehicle production capabilities in Shanghai.
