Nigeria has introduced "Service-Wise GPT," an AI-powered tool designed to enhance public service efficiency. Unveiled at the Global Government Summit, the AI-powered assistant is designed to streamline access to critical government information, automate policy drafting, and improve administrative workflows. Early trials indicate a 73% improvement in time efficiency for users, with a 90% satisfaction rate.
Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, Nigeria’s Head of Civil Service, emphasised that "Service-Wise GPT" will transform how government employees interact with public service regulations, statutory instruments, and operational guidelines. The AI system aims to save time, increase compliance, and improve decision-making across ministries by providing real-time policy research assistance.
The launch of "Service-Wise GPT" aligns with Nigeria’s broader technological ambitions. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the country has been pushing for increased adoption of AI in governance.
In 2024, the government, in collaboration with Google, introduced a ₦100 million fund to support AI-powered startups, accelerating AI innovation within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.
Beyond national efforts, Nigeria’s AI adoption mirrors a growing trend across Africa. The African Union’s Continental AI Strategy calls for responsible AI development and regional cooperation.
However, a major challenge in Nigeria’s public sector has been bureaucratic inefficiency, hampering service delivery. "Service-Wise GPT" plans to address this by automating routine administrative tasks, such as memo creation and policy analysis.
The Brookings Institution highlighted the need for African governments to develop AI policies that prioritise privacy, security, and transparency. Addressing these concerns will be critical as Nigeria moves forward with its AI-driven transformation.
Nigeria’s embrace of AI extends beyond the civil service. In 2023, the government sought the expertise of Nigerian-born AI scientists to help develop the country’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. This initiative, along with investments in AI startups and research, positions Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s AI evolution.
With "Service-Wise GPT," Nigeria is not only modernising its public service but also setting the stage for AI adoption in other critical sectors. If successfully implemented, this initiative could serve as a model for other African nations looking to harness AI for improved governance and service delivery.
