Saudi Arabia's Groundbreaking Plastic Waste-to-Fuel Initiative
In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, Saudi Arabia has unveiled a new plastic waste management initiative aimed at processing nearly 3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually to generate refuse-derived fuels. This ambitious project is a collaboration between German environmental consulting firm MVW Lechtenberg and Partner and Norwegian solution provider Empower.
The project is anticipated to significantly cut carbon emissions, with an estimated reduction of approximately 1,791,300 tonnes per year. Empower’s innovative blockchain technology will play a crucial role in ensuring transparent tracking and management of plastic waste, from collection through recycling and conversion into refuse-derived fuel.
Aligning with the nation’s sustainable development goals and the National Environment Strategy, the Saudi Investment Recycling Co. is a key player in this initiative. The project promotes a circular economy by combining plastic credits with refuse-derived fuel, thereby incentivizing responsible waste disposal through financial rewards for verified plastic waste collection and recycling activities. These credits are tradable, offering organizations a way to meet environmental standards effectively.
