Green Investments: Transforming Gulf Economies into a $13 Trillion Powerhouse by 2050

20 October 2023•

A recently released report by Century International Holdings, the Gulf Investment Report 2023, suggests that green and sustainable investments have the potential to transform the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Gulf countries.

According to the report, embracing a green growth strategy could propel the region's GDP to an impressive $13 trillion by the year 2050.

This remarkable figure represents a doubling of the projected $6 trillion regional GDP, a promising milestone already on the horizon.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have already collectively reached the $2 trillion GDP mark, with initial projections forecasting a growth to $6 trillion by 2050.

However, this new projection of $13 trillion can be realized if these nations wholeheartedly adopt green and sustainable strategies, as advocated by the report.

To harness this immense potential, the GCC states can focus on various key areas, one of which is the production of green and blue hydrogen.

This presents a significant opportunity for the region to become a leading producer, further enhancing its economic prospects.

Moreover, the report points out that the GCC region could attract up to $300 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) if it acts swiftly to establish itself as a global hub for resilient and sustainable industries.

This shift in focus aligns with the evolving trends in global value chains (GVC) that are increasingly prioritizing sustainability and resilience, as highlighted by Strategy&.

Issam Abou Sleiman, the Regional Director of the World Bank in the MENA region, noted that the GCC witnessed an average growth rate exceeding 7% in the previous year.

This impressive growth, driven primarily by Saudi Arabia, the region's largest economy, can be attributed to the accelerated transition to a low-carbon economy.

Factors such as soaring oil and gas prices and the imperative for greater energy security in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine conflict have contributed to this shift.

Sleiman emphasized that renewable energy industries are poised to attract trillions of dollars in new investments, alongside opportunities in both upstream and downstream industries.

Furthermore, he highlighted the GCC's potential to become a leading producer of green and blue hydrogen, provided the right regulations, policies, and investments are put in place to support this transition. In doing so, the GCC countries can emerge with more robust and sustainable economies, generating a wealth of rewarding job opportunities.

Several countries in the region have already embarked on green and sustainable projects to reduce carbon emissions.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, has committed over $40 billion to clean energy initiatives in the last 15 years, with plans to allocate an additional $163.5 billion to clean and renewable energy sources over the next three decades.

In a recent development, the UAE has inaugurated its first utility-scale wind farms, capable of powering 23,000 homes, marking a significant stride towards their sustainable energy goals.
