Field Intelligence Secures $11M Initiative to Tackle Maternal Health in Africa
25 September 2024•
African healthtech company Field Intelligence has launched a new initiative aimed at reducing maternal mortality and improving newborn and child health across the continent. Supported by an initial $11 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the program seeks to introduce advanced medical therapies and enhance healthcare supply chains in Africa. By leveraging its existing technology and distribution network, which already supports over 40,000 healthcare providers in Kenya and Nigeria, Field Intelligence is prioritizing access to life-saving treatments for underserved communities, with a focus on maternal health.
One of the critical issues being addressed is postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a leading cause of maternal death. Through this new service, expectant mothers will have access to innovative therapies such as heat-stable carbetocin and other interventions designed to prevent and manage PPH. The initiative also aims to tackle preeclampsia, a severe pregnancy complication.
Field Intelligence's CEO, Michael Moreland, highlighted the urgency of addressing maternal health in Africa, noting that women in Africa are 45 times more likely to die during childbirth compared to women in Europe. He emphasized the importance of using health technology to create impactful partnerships between private and public sectors to improve public health outcomes.
