Ethiopia Inks $600 Million Deal with UAE's AMEA Power for Massive 300 MW Wind Farm
04 December 2023•
In a significant move towards bolstering its renewable energy capacity, Ethiopia has recently entered into a strategic agreement with the United Arab Emirates-based AMEA Power for the construction of a formidable 300-megawatt wind farm.
The deal, announced by Ethiopia's finance ministry on Sunday (3/12), underscores the nation's commitment to expanding its electricity coverage, a critical need given that, as of 2020, only half of the population had access to electricity, leaving approximately 60 million people off the grid, as reported by the World Bank.
The colossal Aysha wind farm is slated to span an expansive 18,000 acres of land, as detailed in a statement from the ministry.
The ambitious project aims not only to contribute significantly to Ethiopia's renewable energy portfolio but also to address the pressing issue of insufficient electricity access.
During both the construction and operational phases, the Aysha wind farm is expected to generate around 2,000 job opportunities, providing a substantial economic boost to the region.
AMEA Power, headquartered in Dubai, specializes in renewable energy initiatives and has a notable footprint in various regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and other emerging markets.
The collaboration with AMEA Power aligns with Ethiopia's broader vision of harnessing sustainable energy sources to meet its growing power demands.
Ethiopia, which already hosts two smaller wind power projects in the Oromiya and Tigray regions, anticipates that the Aysha project will emerge as the country's largest wind power generation facility upon completion.
The finance ministry expressed confidence in the transformative impact of this venture, marking a pivotal step in Ethiopia's journey towards a greener and more energy-efficient future.
