Cryptocurrencies Will be Accepted as Payment by Ferrari in the United States
16 October 2023•
Ferrari, a renowned luxury sports car manufacturer, has initiated the acceptance of cryptocurrency as a form of payment for their high-end vehicles in the United States.
The company plans to expand this payment option to Europe in response to requests from affluent clientele.
This move is notable as many established companies, considered blue-chip, have been hesitant to embrace cryptocurrencies due to their inherent volatility and regulatory uncertainties.
Factors such as fluctuating values and significant energy consumption have deterred widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies for commercial transactions.
Notably, Tesla, an electric car manufacturer, had briefly accepted bitcoin as payment in 2021 but suspended this option due to environmental apprehensions, as voiced by CEO Elon Musk.
Enrico Galliera, Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer of Ferrari, told Giulio Piovaccari from Reuters that the company is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint in response to the growing interest in cryptocurrencies.
Ferrari aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2030, a commitment reinforced by the influence of crypto-investing clients, ranging from young investors who have amassed wealth through cryptocurrencies to traditional investors seeking portfolio diversification.
The move is also motivated by the market and dealers' requests.
Despite improvements in energy efficiency for some cryptocurrencies like ether, concerns persist regarding the energy-intensive mining associated with bitcoin.
In the first half of this year, Ferrari shipped over 1,800 cars to its Americas region, including the U.S.
While the company's order portfolio is strong and fully booked into 2025, they aim to explore sales through cryptocurrency to reach a broader audience.
Ferrari plans to expand this crypto initiative to Europe by the first quarter of next year and other regions where cryptocurrencies are legally accepted, leveraging BitPay as the initial payment processor in the U.S.
Transactions can be made in bitcoin, ether, and USDC without affecting the car prices.
Ferrari aims to ensure transactions are secure, compliant, and shielded from cryptocurrency price fluctuations.
The company's interest in crypto sales is consistent across the U.S. and Europe, with the EMEA region being their largest market, accounting for 46% of car shipments in the first half of the year.
However, this approach is not applicable in countries like China where cryptocurrencies are restricted.
Ferrari's U.S. dealers are already on board with the scheme, and the company expects more to join soon.
