Kenya's BuuPass Partners with mTek to Offer Seamless Trip Insurance for Travelers

10 August 2024•

Kenyan startups BuuPass, a transportation platform, and mTek, a digital insurance provider, have joined forces to enhance the travel experience by integrating comprehensive trip insurance into the ticket booking process.

BuuPass, co-founded in 2016 by Sonia Kabra and Wyclife Omondi, operates as a B2B2C mobility marketplace, enabling users to search, compare, and book travel tickets through its web, app, and USSD services. The platform also offers a SaaS solution for bus operators to manage operations, inventory, and sales. To date, BuuPass has facilitated the sale of over 16 million travel tickets, generating over $100 million in total goods value. It has participated in the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and received backing from the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund, along with acquiring QuickPass earlier this year.

mTek, established in 2020, offers a fully digital and paperless ecosystem for the insurance industry, allowing customers to purchase insurance, compare policies, and file claims directly through smart devices. The platform collaborates with 35 Kenyan underwriters and secured $3 million in funding in 2022.

This partnership is set to offer travelers enhanced safety and convenience, as BuuPass users can now purchase mTek’s trip insurance directly when booking bus tickets. The insurance covers accidents and medical emergencies, providing financial protection and support during unforeseen incidents.
