BasiGo Rwanda Expands Fleet with $225,000 Grant

By Staff Writer 12 July 2024

BasiGo Rwanda, an electric vehicle company, has secured a RWF 300 million ($225,000) recoverable grant from Ireme Invest, the green investment facility of the Rwanda Green Fund. This grant will be used to upgrade the company's charging infrastructure, supporting its expanding fleet of electric public transport buses in Kigali. Additionally, BasiGo Rwanda will establish a charging station capable of servicing at least 20 electric buses overnight.

This funding follows BasiGo's expansion into Rwanda last year, where the Kenyan EV startup committed to delivering 200 electric buses to local transport operators through its Pay-As-You-Drive financing model.

After its entry into Rwanda, BasiGo raised $1.5 million from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to further its operations in the country. In March 2024, the company also secured $3 million in equity funding from CFAO Group to boost its electric bus production in both Kenya and Rwanda.
