Apple Maps Launches on Web to Rival Google Maps

Apple Maps Launches on Web to Rival Google Maps

By Staff Writer, 26 July 2024

Apple has announced the launch of Apple Maps on the web via a public beta, allowing users to access the service directly from their browsers. This move positions Apple Maps as a direct competitor to Google Maps, which has been available on the web for a long time.

The web version of Apple Maps is currently accessible in English and compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Apple plans to expand support to additional languages, browsers, and platforms in the future.

Similar to its mobile app, Apple Maps on the web offers driving and walking directions, food ordering from place cards, browsing curated guides and reviews, and more. Apple also plans to introduce additional features, such as the 360-degree panoramic “Look Around” view, to the web version in the coming months.

Developers can link to Maps on the web, enabling their users to access driving directions, detailed place information, and more.

The launch of the web version comes 12 years after Apple Maps debuted on the iPhone. By making Apple Maps available on the web, Apple aims to reach a broader audience and compete more directly with Google Maps, which has been the dominant web mapping service.
