ADQ Set to Acquire a Minority Stake in Sotheby’s in a $1 Billion Deal

13 August 2024•

Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, ADQ, is set to acquire a minority stake in the renowned auction house Sotheby’s, signaling its commitment to expanding its influence in the global arts and luxury markets. The investment, estimated at around $1 billion, is part of a definitive agreement with Sotheby’s, which was acquired by Patrick Drahi in 2019. Drahi will continue as the majority owner, while also investing additional capital alongside ADQ.

This strategic move aligns with ADQ’s broader objective of diversifying Abu Dhabi’s economy by pursuing investments that add significant value. As a key partner in the Emirate’s push towards becoming a competitive, knowledge-based economy, ADQ's investment is expected to bolster Sotheby’s growth ambitions and facilitate its expansion into new markets, particularly in the Middle East.

Hamad Al-Hammadi, ADQ’s deputy group CEO, emphasized the importance of this investment, highlighting Sotheby’s strong brand and market leadership. He expressed enthusiasm about future collaboration opportunities and the role ADQ will play in supporting Sotheby’s growth and innovation efforts. The agreement involves ADQ acquiring newly issued shares in Sotheby’s, which will help the auction house reduce its debt and advance its strategic initiatives.
