The cost of healthcare in the U.S. has been rising rapidly, but the portion of those costs footed by patients has increased even faster. Just two decades ago, fees paid by patients accounted for only 5% of hospitals’ and doctors’ revenue, but by 2017, those fees made up 35% of revenue.

This trend inevitably led millions of U.S. citizens to accumulate significant medical debt, which now totals at least $220 billion, according to estimates by independent health policy research firm, KFF.

While there’s no straightforward solution to this burgeoning debt problem, a 5-year-old startup, PayZen, aims to make healthcare more affordable by enabling patients to pay their bills in interest and fee-free installments over time.

The company’s product, which it’s branding as “care now, pay later,” has had strong traction with consumers — PayZen claims that revenue has expanded sixfold in each of the past two years.

That strong growth recently helped PayZen close a $32 million Series B, led by NEA, that also saw participation from existing backers, including 7WireVentures, Signal Fire and Viola Ventures. In conjunction with the equity round, the company secured a new $200 million warehouse credit facility from Viola Credit and a syndicate of insurance companies.

The round values the company upward of $200 million, according to a person familiar with the deal.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--PayZen, the fintech company tackling healthcare affordability with personalized, no-cost patient financing solutions, has raised a $220 million growth round to strengthen its leadership position as it pioneers the new category of Affordability Financing. The round is composed of $20 million in equity financing and a $200 million credit facility. The oversubscribed equity component was led by 7wireVentures, while Viola Credit provided a $200 million warehouse credit facility to support continued market expansion. This latest investment round reflects the significant and rapidly accelerating industry demand for PayZen’s affordability financing platform since it was introduced last year.

Today PayZen, a technology company tackling healthcare affordability with AI-powered solutions, announced an oversubscribed Series B, led by NEA, with full participation from existing investors including 7wireVentures, SignalFire, Viola Ventures, and others. The round includes $32M Equity and a new $200M credit warehouse from Viola Credit and a syndicate of insurance companies. This additional credit facility will support its continued rapid growth and market expansion.

PayEm, as it came to be known, launched in 2019 — Jobani partnered with fellow developer Omer Rimoch to get the idea off the ground. Creating a spend and procurement platform from scratch might’ve been a big risk, but it appears to have paid off for Jobani, who claims that PayEm now has “hundreds” of customers and fast-growing revenue (up 550% over the last year).

To set the stage for further growth, PayEm has closed a $20 million Series A equity round and taken out a $200 million credit line, the company announced today. Viola Credit, Mitsubishi Financial Group, Collaborative Fund, Pitango First, NFX, LocalGlobe and Glilot+ are among those who contributed the $220 million in funds, which Jobani says will be put toward expanding PayEm’s card operations, serving larger customers and improving the employee experience within the core digital product.
