Chinese tech conglomerate Tencent Holdings Ltd. has bought a $264 million stake in Walmart Inc WMT-owned Indian e-commerce firm Flipkart, Press Trust of India reported.

The outlet citing official documents said the company bought shares from Indian internet entrepreneur Binny Bansal, Flipkart's co-founder, through its European subsidiary.

Bansal now holds a 1.84% stake in Flipkart after selling part of his stake to Tencent Cloud Europe BV — Tencent's European subsidiary.

Flipkart said on Monday it has raised $3.6 billion at a post-money valuation of $37.6 billion in what is widely believed to be the pre-IPO round for the Indian e-commerce conglomerate as it works to list in the public markets as soon as early next year.

The new round of funding — by far the largest for any Indian startup — was led by GIC, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and Walmart, along with investments from sovereign funds DisruptAD, Qatar Investment Authority, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Tencent, Willoughby Capital, Antara Capital, Franklin Templeton and Tiger Global.

The Monday investment marks the return of SoftBank as a shareholder of Flipkart. SoftBank, which had taken the exit from the startup when the Bangalore-based firm sold majority stakes to Walmart in 2018 at a valuation of $22 billion, has reinvested about $500 million in the new round.

“At Flipkart, we are committed to transforming the consumer internet ecosystem in India and providing consumers access and value. This investment by leading global investors reflects the promise of digital commerce in India and their belief in Flipkart’s capabilities to maximise this potential for all stakeholders,” said Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Chief Executive Officer at Flipkart Group, in a statement.

“As we serve our consumers, we will focus on accelerating growth for millions of small and medium Indian businesses, including kiranas. We will continue to invest in new categories and leverage made-in-India technology to transform consumer experiences and develop a world-class supply chain.”

As part of the new fundraise, Flipkart is also giving its employees the option to sell their stock options worth $80.5 million, Krishnamurthy told them on Monday.

Flipkart had originally hit the market to raise money early this year and was initially looking to raise just about $1 billion, TechCrunch first reported.

Flipkart valued at $37.6 billion in new $3.6 billion fundraise

Homegrown ecommerce giant Flipkart has raised $62.8 Mn from China-based gaming and social media giant Tencent as an extension of its $1.2 Bn funding rounds, the Walmart-owned company’s regulatory filings in Singapore have highlighted.

The filings, which were sourced by business intelligence firm Paper.vc, showed that Tencent will own about 4 to 5.3% stake in Flipkart Pte, which is the online retailer’s Singapore-based holding. Though this is a small investment in the ecommerce giant, it comes as a time when the anti-China sentiment is at its peak.

Amidst Border Standoff, Flipkart Bags $62.8 Mn From China-Based Tencent

Following months of rumors, Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has confirmed that it has raised $1.4 billion in new funding at a post-money valuation of $11.6 billion to battle Amazon and Alibaba. The deal includes some big-name strategic investors: China’s Tencent, eBay and Microsoft, which join existing Flipkart backers that include Tiger Global, Naspers, Accel and DST Global.

The investment will also see Flipkart take control of eBay India, a second-tier e-commerce player in India, which will remain an independent e-commerce site. Separately eBay, which is a minor investor in Flipkart rival Snapdeal, has inked an international deal with Flipkart to cross-promote products between the services. That’ll give eBay sellers a chance to reach consumers in India, and Flipkart sellers the opportunity to expand their sales overseas, too.

Flipkart has now raised $4.65 billion from investors to date, according to Crunchbase. Its most recent round prior to today was $700 million in July 2015, which valued the company at a much higher $15 billion. While that’s a significant down round, which many had been predicting, this investment is the single largest round of financing from an India tech startup.

But, regardless, times have changed at the company. Flipkart shuffled its leadership in January when former Tiger Global executive Kalyan Krishnamurthy became its CEO, and it has been hard to keep up with the sheer volume of rumors coming out since then.

Last month, Flipkart was reported to have raised $1 billion from investors, with plans for a further billion to come later. It also has been linked with a merger deal with rival Snapdeal, a move media claim is motivated by Snapdeal investor SoftBank, in a bid to bolster its competitive edge against Amazon, while giving Snapdeal a springboard to bounce back from a series of struggles that have included 500-plus layoffs in February.

While the status and likelihood of other deals is unclear, today’s announcement gives Flipkart a series of very strategic allies to battle Amazon and Alibaba-backed Paytm, and “drive the next phase of e-commerce growth in India,” to use the company’s own words.

The Chinese company invested in Dream11 Fantasy, which operates an eponymous fantasy sport website, as part of its Series D funding, an executive at the Indian company told TechCircle, asking not to be named.
The company's existing investors, which include venture capital firm Kalaari Capital and private equity firm Multiples Alternate Asset Management, also put money in this round, the executive said.

Cars24, a startup out of India that has built an app and website for selling used cars and motorbikes, has raised $400 million: a Series G of $300 million in equity and a further $100 million in debt. The fundraise is coming just three months after Cars24 last closed a round — $450 million, with $340 million as a Series F and a further $110 million in debt — and as a mark of how heated the market is right now, Cars24’s valuation has nearly doubled in that short time: It’s now $3.3 billion versus $1.84 billion three months ago.

Alpha Wave Global (which co-led the last round under its previous brand, Falcon Edge Capital) is leading this Series G, with participation from other existing investors. Cars24 is not disclosing who those investors are, but other backers include DST Global, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Alibaba, Tencent, Moore Strategic Ventures, Exor Seeds, Raptor Group and around 20 others.

Cars24 claims to have a 90% share of India’s used-car market, and it’s gotten there by way of technology. Its tools include a search engine for people to find vehicles (its wide inventory being one of the main unique selling points versus physical used-car lots); options for financing for the vehicle; and logistics software to subsequently organize and carry out vehicle deliveries to new owners. It also has built analytics to measure demand and calibrate pricing and make online assessments of vehicles. Cars24 currently has some 13 million monthly visitors to its site and has sold over 400,000 vehicles (both cars and motorbikes) to date.

The used car market is getting another major infusion of venture capital today, with one of the faster scaling startups out of India picking up a major round of financing to double down on growth: Cars24 — a site and app that sells used cars and used two-wheeled motorbikes — has raised $450 million, a Series F of $340 million and $110 million in debt. The investment values Cars24 at $1.84 billion post-money, the company said, making it one of the more valuable privately held used car startups globally.

DST Global, Falcon Edge and SoftBank Vision Fund 2 co-led the Series F, with Tencent and existing investors Moore Strategic Ventures and Exor Seeds also participating. The debt round came from a mix of financial institutions. This fundraise, now confirmed and official, was rumored in past weeks, although at a smaller amount: It didn’t include the debt portion, and some reports were based on regulatory filings for less than the sum ultimately raised.

India’s Cars24, a used-vehicle sales platform, raises $450M at a $1.84B valuation

India has a new tech unicorn. Hike, a four-year-old messaging app, today announced that it has closed $175 million in funding led by new investors Chinese internet giant Tencent and manufacturing firm Foxconn. The Series D round values the company at $1.4 billion, founder and CEO Kavin Bharti Mittal confirmed to TechCrunch.

India’s WhatsApp rival Hike raises $175M led by Tencent at a $1.4B valuation

Vernacular audiobooks and podcast marketplace Pocket FM has raised Rs 41 crore in Series A round from Tencent, Times Group and Lightspeed India. 

Tencent Cloud BV led the round by investing Rs 23.41 crore, whereas Lightspeed India and Times Group infused Rs 11.22 crore and Rs 6.7 crore respectively, regulatory filings show. The deal was executed in April when foreign direct investment from Chinese investors was allowed under the automatic route.

Pocket FM had raised Rs 4.61 crore its seed capital from Lightspeed and Times Group in December  2018. Importantly, this is the second bet by Tencent in vernacular content space. Early this year, it led a Rs 76 crore worth Series C round in Bengaluru-based Pratilipi.

As per Fintrackr’s estimate, Pocket FM was valued at around Rs 116 crore (post-money), which is a jump of 6.3x in its valuation as compared to Rs 18.5 crore when it raised Rs 4.6 crore in its seed round.

Promoters' collective shareholding has been diluted from 64.75% to 41.65% after the fresh infusion. Rohan Nayak controls 15.1% while Nishanth Srinivas commands 14.47% and Prateek Dixit owns 12.08%.


 Lightspeed now is the biggest stakeholder in the company. It holds 22.61% stake in Pocket Fm followed by Tencent BV which has acquired 20.1% in this round of funding. Times Group now controls a 9.04% stake, whereas the ESOP pool consists of 6.43%. With the Series A round, the company has raised a total of Rs 45.7 crore external equity capital.

Pocket FM deals in four genres: audiobooks, podcast, entertainment self-help book (personality development and motivational). According to its website, it offers over 10,000 hours of audiobooks and podcasts across three languages: Hindi, Tamil and Bengali. 

Over the past two-three years, the consumption of audio content has shot up among vernacular users. The segment has been dominated by Pratilipi that has raised about $30 million across three institutional rounds.

Exclusive: Pocket FM bags Rs 41 Cr in Series A; valuation scales

MyGate, a Bangalore-based startup that offers security management and convenience service for guard-gated premises, said today it has bagged more than $50 million in a new financing round as it looks to expand its footprint in the nation.

Chinese internet giant Tencent, Tiger Global, JS Capital and existing investor Prime Venture Partners funded the three-year-old startup’s $56 million Series B financing round. The new round pushes MyGate’s total fundraise to $67.5 million.

MyGate offers an eponymous mobile app that allows home residents to approve entries and exits, communicate with their neighbors, log attendance and pay society maintenance bills and daily help workers.

The startup says it is operational in 11 cities in India and has amassed over 1.2 million home customers. Its customer base is increasing by 20% each month, it claimed. The service is handling 60,000 requests each minute and clocking over 45 million check-in requests each month.

The idea of MyGate came after its co-founder and CEO, Vijay Arisetty, left the Indian armed force. In an interview with TechCrunch, he said his family was appalled to learn about the poor state of security across societies in India.

“This was also when e-commerce companies and food delivery firms were beginning to gain strong foothold in the nation. This meant that many people were entering a gated community each day,” he said.

MyGate has inked partnerships with many e-commerce players to create a system to offer a silent and secure delivery experience for its users. The startup also trains guards to understand the system.

Nigerian healthtech startup, Remedial Health, raises $12 million in Series A funding to expand the reach of its services

Optibus, which uses AI to help public transportation bodies and their mass transit partners plan and operate their networks, has raised $100 million, funding that it will be using to continue expanding its product set and wider business footprint, CEO and co-founder Amos Haggiag said in an interview in London this week.The Series D funding values Optibus at $1.3 billion, which the Israeli startup says makes it the first “unicorn” in the public transportation tech space.Insight Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, Verizon Ventures, Pitango First & Pitango Growth, Tencent and SOMV Momentum are among the investors in this round, which brings the total raised by the startup to $260 million and is coming about 14 months after Optibus raised $107 million in a Series C at a $400 million to $500 million valuation.
