Africa’s retail payments, mostly cash-based, is expected to reach $2.1 trillion by 2025. Kenya’s MarketForce wants to digitize a large portion of them. Today, the B2B retail end-to-end distribution platform is announcing the close of its $2 million pre-Series A round.

The investors who took part in this round include existing ones — P1 Ventures and Y Combinator, and new ones like Launch Africa, V8 Capital, Future Africa, GreenHouse Capital, Rebel Fund, Remapped Ventures, and some unnamed angel investors.

MarketForce has raised a total of $2.5 million, which includes its $350,000 seed round last year and $150,000 check from Y Combinator as part of the accelerator’s Summer 2020 batch. 

Tesh Mbaabu and Mesongo Sibuti founded MarketForce in 2018. The founders wanted to solve the fragmentation issue they noticed among small retail shops and their distribution networks. In addition, these shops are often used as points for offering financial services to the everyday Kenyan. Thus, MarketForce’s play enables the optimized distribution of FMCG goods and financial services through this network of agents.

It was this business that got the startup into Y Combinator. But upon graduation, MarketForce decided to tests its hands on another product — RejaReja, a B2B e-commerce marketplace for merchants.

RejaReja was launched in December 2020. The platform helps informal retail merchants buy and sell FMCGs and digital financial services. With RejaReja, MarketForce joins a growing list of startups like TradeDepot and Sokowatch trying to revamp supply-chain markets for Africa’s informal retailers.

Launched in 2018, MarketForce enables consumer brands to optimise how they deliver essential goods and services to retailers and consumers by bridging the information gap in last mile distribution, while maximising efficiency across the sales and distribution value chain. 

The startup’s platform leverages mobile devices by enabling field agents to record all customer interactions as they happen in the field, and then aggregates this data and presents it through live web dashboards.

Disrupt Africa reported in May that MarketForce had raised US$350,000 in seed funding to help it build upon its existing momentum and enhance its product to unlock new revenue streams, the funding coming from the ViKtoria Business Angels Network (VBAN), EchoVC Partners, P1 Ventures, and Ventures Platform.

Amenli, a Y Combinator Summer 2021 graduate, has raised $2.3 million in a seed funding round to provide insurance services to Egyptian consumers. The round was co-led by P1 Ventures, GFC, and Anim Fund, with participation from Costanoa VC, Liquid2 Ventures, Cliff Angels, and other angel investors. The funding will be used to expand Amenli's team, scale operations, and acquire more customers in Egypt's untapped $2 billion insurance market.

Reliance Health, a digital healthcare provider based in Lagos and Texas, raised $40 million in a Series B funding round led by General Atlantic. This round is the largest of its kind in African health tech. Other investors include Partech, Picus Capital, Tencent Exploration, and others. The company plans to use the funds to build two more clinic facilities in Nigeria, hire talent, scale new product lines, and expand into new markets, including Egypt.

The funding round was led by US seed-stage accelerator Techstars and African impact-focused VC fund Atlantica Ventures, with participation from institutional investors such as Future Perfect Ventures, Raba Capital, and P1 Ventures. The startup aims to advance its API gateway that consolidates APIs from multiple sources under a unified specification, which can be refined to meet final standards once relevant policies are in place.

The round was led by Techstars and Atlantica Ventures, with participation from Future Perfect Ventures, Raba Capital, and P1 Ventures. OnePipe aggregates APIs from various sources and plans to onboard more banks to its network, generating revenue by taking a cut from fees charged by partner banks.

Egypt's SubsBase closes $2.4 million seed round

Egypt-based online pharmacy marketplace Yodawy, has raised $7.5 million in a Series B funding round led by Middle East Venture Partners (MEVP), Global Ventures and Algebra Ventures, with participation from CVentures, P1 Ventures and Athaal Angel Investors Group.

The latest funding will help Yodawy to grow its network of pharmacies, patients and health insurers. Also, it will enable it to expand into other emerging markets.

Yodawy raises $7.5 million in Series B funding

Yodawy, a pharmacy benefits manager, raised a $16 million Series B round co-led by Global Ventures and Delivery Hero Ventures, with participation from AAIC Investment and Dallah Al-Baraka. Existing investors like MEVP, C Ventures, and P1 Ventures also participated. The funding will be used to expand across the Middle East and Africa, enhance its Care Program for chronic patients, and improve tech-enabled fulfillment capabilities. Yodawy aims to streamline the prescription cycle and automate operations, having grown its revenue by 400% since its last funding round.

Egyptian health tech Yodawy raises $16M, backed by Delivery Hero Ventures

Egyptian fintech company MoneyFellows has bagged $31 million in a series B funding round, aiming to boost its geographical expansion, a statement showed Sunday.

The round was led by CommerzVentures, Middle East Venture Partners (MEVP), and Arzan Venture Capital. Invenfin and National Investment Company (NIC) as well as existing investors such as Partech, Sawari Ventures, 4DX, and P1Ventures, also took part in the round.

The funding will help MoneyFellows accelerate its growth by diversifying its portfolio of services and growing its product offerings across the B2C and B2B segments, as well as expanding its footprint across Africa and Asia.
