DisrupTech Ventures, one of Egypt’s leading early-stage fintech funds, has announced its first pan-African investment in Nigerian startup Winich Farms, a fast-growing Agri-Tech that is transforming access to markets and credit for smallholder farmers across Nigeria. The investment forms part of Winich’s Pre-Series A round.

Connect Money, an Egyptian fintech, has raised $8 million in seed funding to expand its Banking-as-a-Service platform, which enables non-bank businesses to offer embedded finance services such as white-label debit and credit cards. The funding round was co-led by DisrupTech Ventures, Algebra Ventures, and Lorax Capital Partners, with participation from One Stop Capital and MDP. The startup plans to grow within and outside Egypt, targeting markets like Morocco and Kenya.

Connect Money scores $8M to enable non-bank businesses to offer embedded finance services

Egypt - Mohamed Okasha, Managing Partner at DisrupTech Ventures, has said that the fund expects to invest between $4-5m in 4 new Egyptian fintech startups during the current year.

This came during a round table held by the Fund and attended by Daily News Egypt to announce the developments of its work.

Okasha said that the number of start-up companies in which the fund has invested so far has reached 14, and it plans to reach 28 during the next stage, pointing out that DisrupTech succeeded during the last stage in exiting one company, Fatora.
He added that DisrupTech’s most recent investment was in the artificial intelligence technology company Wide Bot, which operates in the local and Saudi markets and is one of the approved partners of Meta for social media applications.

Mozare3, Egypt's first agri-fintech platform, raised USD 1.1 million in its pre-seed round and an additional USD 2 million in a second round of financing. The company's investors include Algebra Ventures, EFG EV, and Disruptech Ventures, along with six angel investors. Mozare3 plans to expand its operations to five more governorates by the end of the year and aims to serve 100,000 farmers by 2023. The company is finalizing its Series A funding round and plans to expand into Morocco and Sudan in the future.

Fatura, an Egypt-based e-commerce startup, has raised a seven-figure seed funding round led by Disruptech, with participation from EFG EV and Cairo Angels. The company, founded in 2019, aims to digitally transform the FMCG wholesale market by curating a network of 200-250 wholesalers and offering working capital loans to retailers. Fatura plans to use transaction data to assess creditworthiness and digitize the lending cycle, addressing inefficiencies in Egypt's wholesale market.

Khazna, an Egyptian FinTech app, raised $38 million in a Series A funding round consisting of equity and debt. The round was led by Quona Capital, with participation from Global Ventures' Nclude, Speedinvest, Khawarizmi Ventures, Accion Venture Lab, AB Accelerator, Algebra Ventures, Disruptech, and CVentures. Debt financing was provided by Lendable. The funds will be used to expand Khazna's reach to Egypt's unbanked and underbanked population, offering financial services such as credit, salary advances, and bill payment. Khazna plans to introduce four to five new products this year and aims to grow its user base to 5 to 10 million active users in Egypt.

In a country where 50% of its 100 million people are active smartphone users, two out of every three individuals have little or no access to formal financial services in Egypt. 

With banks doing their best to deepen financial services to the underbanked and unbanked across the North African country, startups are also playing their part. One such provider is Cairo-based Khazna — a self-described “financial super app” that has raised a $38 million Series A in debt and equity. The company has received a total of $47 million since its inception.

Cairo – Egypt-based fintech Khazna has closed a $16 million pre-Series B funding round to fuel its growth by applying for a digital banking license in Egypt and expanding into the Saudi market.

The fundraising transaction was led by SANAD Fund for MSME, anb Seed Fund, Aljazira Capital, Khwarizmi Ventures, Nclude, ICU Ventures, Quona, Speedinvest and Disruptech Ventures, according to a press release.

MNT-Halan, Egypt's largest lender to the unbanked, has secured a significant investment from a group of prominent venture capitalists, including Algebra Ventures, DisrupTech, Endeavor Catalyst, Egypt Ventures, MEVP, and Wamda, along with Nowaisii Capital, Shaka Capital, Uber’s founding CTO Oscar Salazar, Unidelta, and Battery Road Digital Holdings. This funding will support MNT-Halan's strategy to innovate its technology, expand its customer base, and enhance financial inclusion in Egypt and beyond. The company has disbursed over $1.7 billion in loans and serves more than 4 million customers.

Egyptian fintech MNT-Halan attracts circa US$120 million from global investors - Apis

More than 70% of Egypt’s young and fast-growing population of over 100 million is financially underserved, despite mobile penetration exceeding 90%.

Traditional banks often overlook this segment because of their spending power or financial status, and fintechs have seized the opportunity to cater to their needs.

One such fintech is MNT-Halan, and today, the company, which describes itself as “Egypt’s leading fintech ecosystem,” is announcing that it has closed a $120 million investment.

The investors backing MNT-Halan include private equity firms Apis Growth Fund II, Development Partners International (DPI) and Lorax Capital Partners, as well as VCs like Middle East Venture Partners, Endeavor Catalyst and DisruptTech.

They join previous local investors like GB Capital, DPI, Algebra Ventures, Wamda, Egypt Ventures, Shaka VC, Nowaisi Capital, Unidelta and Battery Road Digital Holdings that have backed the company in the past. 

In 2017, Mounir Nakhla and Ahmed Mohsen started Halan as a ride-hailing and delivery app offering two and three-wheeler services to customers in Egypt. Since then, it has provided other features, including wallets, bill payment services, e-commerce with buy now, pay later (BNPL) and micro and consumer loans, all in a bid to become a super app.

Then in June of this year, Netherlands-based MNT Investments BV entered a share swap agreement with the Egyptian super app to accelerate the progress of its payments and lending arm, especially in BNPL across Egypt and the MENA region.
