The E-commerce space across MENA, Africa, Pakistan &amp; Turkey has crossed the $600M mark in VC funding coming on par with the funding aggregated over the last year. One exciting VC trend has been investors&rsquo; appetite for B2B solutions with the likes of MaxAB and Capiterin Egypt, Bazaar in Pakistan, and Chari in Morocco raising major rounds this year. Saudi-based E-commerce startups have raised a number of sizable rounds this year,&nbsp;as seen in our KSA Q3 20222 Venture Investment Report, it was platforms that have been rolling out&nbsp;financing and payment solutions that have been gained traction, with wholesale marketplace Sary, and Zid&rsquo;s new&nbsp;$50M Series B highlighting the potential of the space.

The startup is expanding into a new mission, &ldquo;modernize the retail sector&rdquo;. The company&rsquo;s goal is to upgame the retail sector by offering and enabling business owners and retailers with tools and products that will improve their operations efficiency and &nbsp;grow their bottomline. KSA’s Zid raises $50M Series B

Saudi-based Retail enablement company, Zid has successfully raised $50 million (~188 million SAR) in a Series B funding led by IMPACT46 with participation from new investors: Aramco venture capital arm (Waed Ventures) and Endeavour Catalyst. Previous investors: Global Ventures, Elm Company, Arzan and MSA also participated. 

This is the third round of investment Zid has received since the business was founded in 2017, and follows a Series A investment round of $7 million in March 2021. 

The proceeds will be used by Zid to expand into new markets in Saudi Arabia and in the region, conquer new retail verticals, plus digitise and automate more innovative solutions to modernise the retail sector.

Zid has continued its growth in both acquiring new merchants and in transactions. Milestones include doubling its revenues from subscriptions and transactions and a 50% increase in orders made via Zid’s merchants by over 7 million lifetime consumers. Zid’s merchant network now reaches over 7,500 stores across 19 different categories, from small to large merchants in the retail sector.

Zid started by enabling retailers to sell and grow their own online channels. Now, Zid is expanding into a new mission - “modernize the retail sector”. The company’s goal is to up game the retail sector by offering and enabling business owners and retailers with tools and products that will improve the efficiency of their operations and grow their bottom line.

Zid raises $50 million Series B round led by IMPACT46

Saudi Aramco has signed an agreement valued at $250 million with Beyond Limits, a California-based artificial intelligence technology company, to build a global AI corridor, the oil behemoth announced at an industry event in Riyadh last week. 
 
The global AI corridor would create an ecosystem in the Kingdom by commercializing complex AI solutions, training Saudi talent and supporting Saudi startups. 
 
Amjad Abdullat, CEO of Beyond Limits, told Arab News during the event that the agreement will help build the project with relationships between the Kingdom and the US. 
 
&ldquo;In California, we have the greatest number of Nobel Prize laureates, a lot of intellectual property in AI and the largest number of venture capitalists investing in the AI ecosystem. So, we want to bring all that to the Kingdom to help build a strong network of AI entrepreneurs and unicorns,&rdquo; Abdullat told Arab News. 
 
Abdullat explained that the project would have an academy that will focus on training Saudi youth, a residency that will help AI startups in the Kingdom to work with seasoned professionals and an R&amp;D Program that will support the creation of IPs. 
 
&ldquo;There is also an investment component that will attract foreign venture capital investments to the Kingdom, in addition to the domestic investment,&rdquo; he added. 
 
Established in 2014, Beyond Limits specializes in industrial AI technology software and was recognized as Global Company of the Year by Frost &amp; Sullivan and one of America&rsquo;s Best Startup Employers by Forbes in 2021.

Saudi Aramco inks $250m deal with US-based Beyond Limits to build global AI corridor

Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures LLC (&ldquo;SAEV&rdquo;), the corporate venturing subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, today announced the closing of its direct investment into Sekal AS, a company that offers real time decision support and automation software, together with related consultancy and support services to the oil and gas industry.

The company is commercializing two software solutions, DrillScene and DrillTronics, used in drilling operations where rigs have real time data streaming capabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;DrillScene is a self‐calibrating system that provides real‐time early warnings of impending problems in drilling operations. The driller can respond quicker to take corrective actions, reducing down‐time and improving performance. DrillTronics provides added automation and safeguard features to existing drilling control systems and actively controls key elements of the operation, such as draw‐work, top‐drive and mud pumps.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rive Technology Raises $20 Million in Series D Financing

<a href="http://www.inflowcontrol.no/" target="_blank">InflowControl AS</a>, a Porsgrunn, Norway-based developer of inflow control technology to increase recovery and production from oil and gas reservoirs, received an equity investment from&nbsp;<a href="http://www.aramcoventures.com/" target="_blank">Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures</a>, the corporate venturing subsidiary of Saudi Aramco.

The amount of the deal was not disclosed.

The company intends to use the proceeds to bring its technology into the market.

Founded in May 2011 and led by CEO Vidar Mathiesen, InflowControl is developing AICV&reg; &ndash; Autonomous Inflow Control Valve, a patented technology that aims to replace the conventional Inflow Control Devices and ensure significant increase in oil production and recovery.

InflowControl Receives Equity Investment from Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures

Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures LLC (&quot;SAEV&quot;), the corporate venturing subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, has led an investment into Novomer Inc., an emerging sustainable chemistry company pioneering a family of high performance, environmentally responsible polymers and chemical intermediates. Novomer Inc. has developed two platform chemical technologies based on proprietary catalysts that facilitate the transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO), together with propylene oxide (PO) or ethylene oxide (EO), into economically competitive, high-performance industrial products: polyols and chemical intermediates, including acrylic acid.

Parsable Raises $60 Million, Taking Total Funding to $133 Million to Accelerate Connected Work at Enterprise Scale

Parsable, which makes easy-to-use software to help factory workers collaborate&nbsp;and work more efficiently in a digital age, said today it has finalized a&nbsp;$40 million&nbsp;Series C investment round, bringing&nbsp;its total capital raised to $68 million.

The investment round was led by Future Fund Lightspeed Venture Partners and other investors that have backed Parsable in earlier rounds, including Airbus Ventures, Saudi Aramco and&nbsp;B37 Ventures, a global fund backed by industrial corporations in 60 countries around the world.&nbsp;

Parsable&#39;s Connected Worker platform is a hot commodity in the rapidly transforming industrial&nbsp;world, where manufacturers are increasingly turning to high-tech automation in their facilities. Rather than replacing industrial workers with robots, however, Parsable gives them the digital tools to work more efficiently alongside the machines.

The transition to Industry 4.0 as it is sometimes called can be rocky: veteran workers tend to resist technology that is clunky and slows down their productivity, while younger workers are often turned off by the manufacturing sector because it&#39;s not seen as cutting edge. Parsable Raises $20M from Global Industrial Firms to Eliminate Paper

<a href="http://www.siluria.com/" target="_blank">Siluria Technologies</a>, a pioneer in the commercial production of fuels and chemicals made from clean and abundant natural gas, announced today the initial close of its Series D financing round. GE Ventures and Saudi Aramco Make Strategic Investment in Desktop Metal

<a href="http://www.zahroofvalves.com/" target="_blank">Zahroof Valves Inc.</a>, a Houston, Texas-based maker of an innovative valve for use in gas compressors, raised a Series C funding round of undisclosed amount.

The round was led by Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures (SAEV), the corporate venturing arm of Saudi Aramco, with participation from existing investor NGP Energy Technology Partners (NGP ETP).

The company intends to use the funds for global expansion.

Led by Tony Gioffredi, Chief Executive Officer, and Zahroof Mohamed, President and Chief Technology Officer, ZVI has developed and markets the Straightflo (SF) Valve for use in reciprocating gas compressors.&nbsp;The ZVI Straightflo Valve, developed by Mohamed, is a direct &ldquo;drop-in&rdquo; replacement for all manufacturers&rsquo; compressor valves and can be operated in most compression applications including natural gas gathering, production, transmission and storage; CNG; FPSO; CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery; H2 and others.

Zahroof Valves Raises Series C Funding Round

FogHorn Systems, whose software aims to save companies&rsquo; money by streamlining data processing, said it has raised $30 million from investors led by Intel Capital and Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures.

Including the latest funding round, the company has so far raised $47.5 million, Chief Executive David King told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

He declined to disclose the company&rsquo;s current valuation.

Founded in 2014, FogHorn is one of the first companies to make software in the little-known area of fog or edge computing that locally analyzes data collected from sensors deployed in industrial equipment to increase speed and save costs.

Edge computing eliminates the need for sending the data to the cloud, instead processing the information where it was generated, in milliseconds.

Many industrial companies are deploying sensors or so-called Industrial Internet of Things, which enables machines to talk to each other and detect problems before they occur.

California-based FogHorn said Honeywell Ventures also took part in the latest funding round, joining existing investors March Capital, GE, Dell Technologies Capital, Robert Bosch Venture Capital, Yokogawa and Darling Ventures.

FogHorn&rsquo;s computing engine can run big data analytics and machine learning on devices that have lower processing power.

The company has forged partnerships with Intel, Dell, GE and other technology companies to get its technology integrated in their products.

FogHorn, which has dozens of customers including Saudi Aramco, GE GE.N, Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise HPE.N, is in the early revenue generation stage, King said.

Software maker FogHorn raises $30 million in latest funding round

The round &ndash; which brought total funding raised to date to $72.5m &ndash; was led by LS Corp., with participaiton from Forte Ventures and existing investors Dell Technologies Capital, Intel Capital, Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures, Honeywell Ventures, GE Ventures, Robert Bosch Venture Capital, March Capital Partners and Darling Ventures.

<a href="https://www.nexwafe.com/" target="_blank">NexWafe GmbH</a>, a Freiburg, Germany-based developer of technology for epitaxial fabrication of silicon wafers for photovoltaics, completed an &euro;8m financing.

The round was led by Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures (SAEV) with participation from Green Gateway Fund 2 (GGF2) advised by Wermuth Asset Management GmbH (WAM) and existing investor Lynwood (Schweiz) AG.

The company intends to use the funds for the commissioning of its 5MW wafer production line in Freiburg, and for initial customer qualifications.

Led by Stefan Reber, CEO, NexWafe is advancing monocrystalline wafers that are fully compatible with standard cell and module fabrication processes. The target market includes solar cell producers. 
The company, a spinoff from the Fraunhofer ISE, leverages its EpiWafer process to allow crystalline silicon layers to be deposited on seed wafers and subsequently detached to produce freestanding wafers, of any desired thickness without kerf loss.

Clarke Closes $10 Million Venture Round Led by Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures and Joined by Chevron

Clarke Valve today completed the sale of $5.5 million of Series B Preferred Stock to a group of investors led by OGCI Climate Investments. Along with funding from Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures and Chevron Technology Ventures, Clarke has now raised $15.5 million of Series B funding.

Clarke&rsquo;s patented Shutter Valves are typically 1/5th&nbsp;the weight, 1/5th&nbsp;the size and 1/5th&nbsp;the cost of equivalent legacy valves, providing substantial benefits to users of industrial control valves in many industries. In addition, Clarke valves are currently the only control valves in the world to achieve the stringent American Petroleum Institute (API) 641 certification for low fugitive emission performance. Fugitive emissions from legacy valve designs is the cause of significant methane emitted to the atmosphere from industrial facilities.

Clarke Valve Closes $5.5 Million Venture Funding Round Led by OGCI Climate Investments

Downhole technology specialist, Well-SENSE, announced today that it has secured a seven figure equity investment from Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures (SAEV), alongside its current owners, FrontRow Energy Technology Group Limited and management.

The support of SAEV as a strategic investor will help Well-SENSE accelerate the expansion of the business around the world, in particular adding the Middle East to the company&rsquo;s current North American focus. Building on a track record of successful jobs, Well-SENSE is now investing in people and infrastructure to support the commercialisation of its FiberLine Intervention (FLI) technology.

The award-winning FLI has already received international recognition as an innovation that provides an entirely new approach to well intervention. FLI uses disposable tools and bare fiber optic line to capture and transmit high definition, real-time data, which represents a fast, low cost, low risk alternative to wireline logging.

Launched to market within the past year, FLI continues to enhance its capabilities, recently introducing Active FLI &ndash; adding single point production logging measurements to distributed sensing along the fiber.

Well-SENSE secures strategic investment from Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures

<a href="http://xage.com/" target="_blank">Xage</a>&nbsp;(pronounced Zage) is a startup working to keep critical infrastructure like oil and gas pipelines, water supplies and electrical grids up and running securely. Today, the company announced a $30 million Series B.

Piva led the round with participation from Momenta, Valor Equity Partners and OurCrowd, along with existing investors March Capital, City Light Capital, Saints Capital and Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures. The startup said it has raised $54 million to date.

Xage uses a bunch of complex technology to help keep critical infrastructure safe. Industrial infrastructure tends to be older and relies on fairly brittle security. Xage was designed to be a modern layer on top of that, which the company refers to as a fabric, CEO Duncan Greatwood said.

&ldquo;The fabric is a mesh of software nodes that overlays the operation to provide granular control of every digital interaction.&nbsp;It provides zero trust protection that spans operations, IT and the cloud, underpinning both cybersecurity and digital transformation,&rdquo; he said.

The solution uses digital ledger technology organized in nodes on a blockchain to limit the impact of an attack, so that getting control of one or two nodes would not compromise the entire network. But the company did not just jump on the blockchain bandwagon with the growing popularity of web3 in 2021. It has been using this technology as a way to control access since its earliest days.

&ldquo;The distributed ledger is still an important part of our software stack. It&rsquo;s part of how we achieve this no single point of failure in the Xage fabric, which is so important for protecting these exposed operational situations,&rdquo; Greatwood told me.

Over the last year, he said that companies have begun to come around to a solution like Xage, driven by the increase in ransomware attacks and growing government regulations around critical infrastructure.&nbsp;This was also driven home by the attack last year on a Florida water supply.

Those factors, along with an increase in its partner network, fueled a big rise in interest in Xage, and that drove the need to seek additional funds to staff up. &ldquo;Even with the right partners, which we have now, we still need staff to help support all of this rollout and the work that we&rsquo;re doing, both bringing the customers on and the deployments, as well,&rdquo; he said.

Today, the company has over 40 employees, a number that he said is increasing by the week. Greatwood expects to be close to 90 or more by the end of 2022. He said that from the earliest days, diversity and inclusion have been top of mind for the company. While it&rsquo;s easy to look at the obvious places like MIT and Stanford for new staff, he said the key is looking beyond that pool to find hidden gems.

&ldquo;​​What we found is that we find superstars and people with superstar potential with much less obvious backgrounds from their resumes, and we kind of grow them and help them fulfill their potential. Very often, frankly, that&rsquo;s the key to finding the right recruits who come from all kinds of different diverse backgrounds and situations,&rdquo; he said.

The other key is creating a welcoming culture, and he said that he and his team work consciously on creating a cooperative, collaborative and welcoming workplace.

&ldquo;We spend time with the team talking about how we work together, and that goes above and beyond just the task-oriented work of the day, making sure that everybody is included and supported as they develop at Xage. The first step is to recruit a diverse workforce, and the second step is to enable the diverse workforce to succeed,&rdquo; he said.

The company intends to take a hybrid approach to work as they enter 2022, with some people in the office and some fully or partially remote, depending on their needs, but he believes some work requires people sometimes being together in the same room to build software this complex.
