Egypt has been a popular tourist destination attracting 13 million tourists at its peak in 2019, with US$14.2 billion in tourism spend.
The majority of tourists are Europeans and Arabs. In 2019, the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report ranked Egypt in 65th out of 140 economies.
It was a top scorer in the MENA region in Environmental Sustainability due to low levels of deforestation, below average air pollution, and travel & tourism industry sustainability and water stress. It was also a top scorer in Cultural Resources and Business Travel due to its numerous sports stadiums, and cultural and entertainment digital demand.
