Nuclear Fission Startups Triple Valuations in 2025 Surge

Venture capital investment in nuclear fission startups reached record levels in 2025, signaling a renewed wave of confidence in nuclear energy as a critical solution to rising global power demand. As electricity consumption accelerates—driven in part by the rapid expansion of data centers and AI infrastructure—investors are increasingly turning to nuclear as a reliable, scalable complement to existing energy systems.

This surge in interest comes at a pivotal time for the broader climate tech sector, which has faced a volatile funding environment in recent years. In contrast, nuclear fission is emerging as a bright spot, benefiting from both technological advancements and shifting investor sentiment toward more dependable, baseload energy sources.

Valuations Surge on Rising Demand

The growing urgency for adaptable and resilient energy solutions has significantly boosted valuations across the sector. In 2025, the median pre-money valuation for nuclear fission startups nearly tripled—from $36.9 million to $106 million—highlighting the strong investor appetite. At the same time, both deal count and total capital invested reached all-time highs, marking 2025 as a breakout year for the space.

A number of investors are leading this charge. Specialist firms such as Nucleation Capital have been particularly active, alongside corporate players like CEA Investissement, reflecting a mix of financial and strategic interest in advancing nuclear technologies.

Small Modular Reactors Take Center Stage

Much of the capital flowing into nuclear fission is being directed toward small modular reactors (SMRs), which are quickly gaining traction as the most commercially viable next-generation nuclear technology. Their modular design allows for flexible deployment across a range of use cases, from grid-scale power to industrial applications.

Recent large funding rounds underscore this trend. Companies like X-energy and Last Energy secured significant late-stage investments in 2025, while Radiant Nuclear raised a combined $465 million to scale production of portable microreactors. Radiant, for instance, aims to manufacture up to 50 reactors annually within a few years of starting production in 2028.

Compared to other emerging clean energy technologies, SMRs benefit from shorter timelines to commercialization, with many expected to become operational in the early 2030s. This relative proximity to market is a key factor driving investor confidence.

Policy Support and a Clearer Path Than Fusion

Government backing is also playing a crucial role. In the United States, the Department of Energy has stepped up investments in SMR development and the supporting fuel supply chain, reinforcing the sector’s momentum.

In contrast, even though nuclear fusion is promising, it remains a longer-term bet with commercialization timelines stretching 15 years or more and significant scientific hurdles still to overcome.

Taken together, these dynamics position nuclear fission—and especially SMRs—as one of the most compelling energy investment themes of the decade.
