Despite navigating a highly volatile geopolitical climate, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) startup ecosystem proved resilient in the first half of the year. During the first half of 2026, MENA startups raised $1.7 billion across 242 funding rounds. While this represents an 18% decline in total funding from the $2.1 billion raised during the same period in 2025—alongside a 28% drop in overall deal volume—the data points to a maturing market. Investors are not retreating; they are becoming far more selective, prioritizing companies with clear paths to scale.
One of the most notable shifts this year is a decreased reliance on debt financing. In H1 2026, debt accounted for 29% of total capital, a significant drop from 44% the previous year. This indicates that equity investments now represent a larger share of the region's overall funding.
As detailed in the infobyte above, capital distribution is heavily skewed toward younger companies. Early-stage startups dominated the transaction volume, with 172 companies raising a combined $444 million. The infographic highlights strong activity at the foundational levels, such as Seed (58 deals) and Pre-Seed (39 deals) rounds. In contrast, later-stage funding remained highly exclusive, with just 11 companies securing $224 million.
Sector-wise, Fintech maintained its crown as the region's top investment destination, attracting $708 million across 51 deals. Logistics ranked second with $315 million—largely driven by a few massive Q2 transactions—and proptech climbed into third place with $241 million across 18 deals.
Geographically, capital continues to concentrate around established hubs. During the second quarter alone, the UAE solidified its position as the region's investment powerhouse, attracting $591 million. Saudi Arabia followed with $102 million, while Egypt secured the third spot with $72.6 million. Ultimately, H1 2026 reflects a cautious but committed investor base, focusing on strong fundamentals over sheer volume.
