The Global AI Power Rankings: US Leads, China and UK Follow

26 August 2026

The global venture capital landscape has been fundamentally redefined by the artificial intelligence boom. With massive mega-rounds and staggering valuations shifting the entire asset class, the race for AI supremacy has accelerated exponentially—especially since investment momentum truly exploded midway through 2023. Based on Pitchbook's data tracking Q3 2020 through Q2 2026, the global AI hierarchy is becoming clear, with capital heavily concentrating in a select few ecosystems.

The Undisputed Leader: San Francisco and the US Ecosystem

No matter how the data is sliced, the United States stands in a league of its own. Topping the chart with an Overall AI Score of 91.3, the US owes much of its success to the unparalleled density of innovation in San Francisco. Between Q3 2020 and Q2 2026, an incredible 77.7% of the $877.2 billion invested in San Francisco went directly to AI-related businesses.

Zooming out to the national level, more than $1 trillion has been poured into US AI companies over the past six years. To put that dominance into perspective, this figure is nearly triple the combined total of the other 22 countries that met the inclusion threshold for these rankings. This historic capital surge is heavily anchored by frontier labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, which continue to absorb billions of dollars at multibillion-dollar valuations. While some might argue the global AI race has already been won by the US, relentless competition and the rapid emergence of new foundational models keep the market running hot.

The Asian and European Challengers

Beyond North America, Asia and Europe are aggressively carving out their own spheres of influence to challenge US dominance.

  • Asia: China reigns as the dominant regional force, safely securing the #2 spot globally with an Overall Score of 60.1. Joining China in the top 10 are India (ranked 8th) and Japan (ranked 9th), proving that the Asian cohort remains a critical pillar of global AI development.
  • Europe & The Middle East: The United Kingdom leads the European market, capturing the #3 spot globally with an Overall Score of 45.9. The UK is followed closely by tech-heavy Israel (#4) and Germany (#5). France (#7) and Sweden (#10) round out the highest-ranking nations, with Sweden notably posting an incredibly strong Growth Score (48.1), indicating a rapidly scaling ecosystem. North America’s footprint is further solidified by Canada, holding strong in 6th place.

The Future: AI Nationalism and Domestic Infrastructure

Looking ahead, global AI investment activity is expected to remain incredibly strong as startups secure fresh funding to capture market share, and potential exits are heavily mooted. However, a new trend is appearing on the horizon: AI protectionism.

As artificial intelligence becomes deeply intertwined with national security and economic stability, countries are increasingly keen to protect their strategic interests. Driven by mounting fears around data privacy, sovereign intelligence, and technological independence, we are likely to see a surge in government-backed, domestic AI players rising to challenge the established, cross-border behemoths in the coming quarters.
