A drop in unemployment can be attributed to the aggressive reforms implemented by the government, which have encouraged local production and aim to create jobs among youth and women in particular.
One of the main areas of focus is structural reforms, addressing low growth and high unemployment by providing financing to SMEs, streamlining the industrial licensing process, and increasing public nurseries to facilitate women’s participation in the workforce.
Prior to 2016, the unemployment rate was slowly decreasing at a rate of 1.8% annually, however after the 2016 reforms, unemployment has decreased at a rate of 11%.
The government’s push to deliver more projects, which includes the bid to host the 2036 Olympics, targets infrastructure and construction of new cities, roads, and bridges that employ a large amount of the Egyptian workforce.
In 2018, a law was passed on the rights of people with disabilities to receive equal work opportunities and requires firms with more than 20 employees to appoint at least 5 percent of workers with disabilities.
