Venture capital in 2024 has been driven by one dominant trend: artificial intelligence. Across 25 landmark R&D-driven companies, AI startups have secured over US $24 billion in recent funding rounds capturing 60% of its funding, far outpacing sectors like advanced hardware, biotech, and nuclear energy.
Industry giants continue to lead the charge. OpenAI raised US $6.6 billion, xAI secured US $6 billion, and Anthropic closed a US $4 billion round. Meanwhile, Databricks made headlines with a US $10 billion equity raise, pushing its valuation past US $60 billion.
AI’s grip on venture funding is stronger than ever. In Q3 2024, AI startups within these top 25 companies captured 31% of global VC investment, compared to just 13% in 2022. Some analysts are calling it a late-’90s-style acceleration, reminiscent of the dot-com boom. With venture firms sitting on over US $328 billion in unallocated capital as of early 2024, according to PitchBook, industry experts expect AI’s dominance in funding to continue, forcing traditional industries to adapt or risk being left behind.
