Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how software is built. What once required months of engineering effort can now be prototyped in days—or even hours—thanks to AI coding assistants and increasingly capable development tools. The surge is evident in recent growth trends. New website launches have climbed sharply since 2024, year-over-year iOS app creation has accelerated to record highs, and GitHub code activity continues to expand as developers use AI to write, debug, and deploy software faster than ever before. Together, these indicators point to a dramatic increase in software production rather than a temporary spike in developer productivity.

AI Is Making Developers More Productive

Much of this acceleration stems from a growing consensus that AI-assisted coding is no longer experimental—it is becoming the default way software is developed. Modern coding assistants can generate boilerplate code, suggest fixes, write tests, explain unfamiliar codebases, and help developers ship products significantly faster than before.

This has enabled startups and small engineering teams to build products that previously required organizations with dozens of software engineers. Rather than replacing developers, AI is allowing them to spend more time on architecture, product design, and solving complex business problems while automating repetitive programming tasks.

More Software Doesn't Always Mean Better Software

The explosion in software creation does not automatically translate into more valuable applications. AI has dramatically reduced the cost of building software, making it easier than ever to recreate existing products or launch simple applications with minimal engineering effort.

At the same time, this shift is exposing an important reality: many software products that once appeared technically difficult to build are, in fact, relatively straightforward when AI handles much of the implementation. As a result, competitive advantage is moving away from simply writing code and toward identifying real customer problems, building differentiated experiences, and integrating AI into meaningful workflows.

The Bigger Picture

Interestingly, today's software boom is occurring before fully autonomous AI agents become commonplace. Most organizations still rely heavily on human oversight, with agentic workflows playing only a limited role in production environments.

As AI agents mature over the coming years, software development could accelerate even further. The next wave of innovation may not come from AI writing more code, but from AI collaborating with humans to build increasingly sophisticated applications at a scale that was previously unimaginable.
