Every startup needs capital to build a product, hire talent, and go to market. But before founders start pitching angels or VCs, there’s a more fundamental question to answer:
Do we actually need external capital, or can we bootstrap?
The right funding path depends on your ambition, market dynamics, business model, ownership preferences, and lifestyle goals. A capital-intensive SaaS targeting a global market may require outside funding early. A niche, cash-flow-positive product might not. Some founders prioritize control and profitability. Others optimize for speed and scale.
At a high level, there are three strategic approaches:
Bootstrapping means building with personal savings or reinvested revenue. It maximizes ownership and capital efficiency but often limits speed.
Early-stage fundraising involves raising capital from angels or (pre-) seed investors to accelerate product development and growth.
Seed strapping sits in the middle: raise one early round to gain momentum, then grow primarily through revenue rather than continuous fundraising.
Once you’ve clarified your strategy, here are five common early-stage funding options:
Informal capital from people you trust. Best suited for idea-stage startups raising smaller pre-seed rounds (often under €250k) to reach MVP or early product-market fit.
Angels typically invest €10k–€100k each and often bring “smart money” — advice, credibility, and networks. Funding can be structured as a priced equity round (clear ownership, immediate dilution) or via a convertible note/CLA (faster, defers valuation, but creates temporary debt).
Target angels who understand your industry and add strategic value — not just capital.
Programs like Y Combinator, Techstars, Antler, or Entrepreneur First offer €100k–€250k plus mentorship and network access in exchange for 6–10% equity. Ideal for first-time founders, incomplete teams, or startups seeking validation and investor access.
VCs write larger checks (€100k–€1M+) and expect venture-scale outcomes. This path fits startups targeting large markets with aggressive growth ambitions — and founders willing to trade equity and some control for scale.
Government and institutional grants provide capital without giving up equity. Particularly attractive for research-heavy or deep-tech startups, though application processes can be lengthy.
Whichever route you choose, one rule applies: refine your positioning and messaging before raising. Capital follows clarity, and clarity starts with strategy.
