4 Graphs to Understand Tourism in Egypt

Egypt has been a popular tourist destination attracting 13 million tourists at its peak in 2019, with US$14.2 billion in tourism spend.

In 2019, the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report ranked Egypt in 65th out of 140 economies. It was a top scorer in the MENA region in Environmental Sustainability due to low levels of deforestation, below average air pollution, and travel & tourism industry sustainability and water stress. It was also a top scorer in Cultural Resources and Business Travel due to its numerous sports stadiums, and cultural and entertainment digital demand. Egypt was one of CNN Travel’s 21 top tourist destinations and Forbes’ top 50 Places in the world in 2021.

The hotel occupancy rate is still recovering after the pandemic but hotel supply is expected to grow in 2023, most of them being in the top resort towns of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada.
